OldSols SunTops Update: Feb 2023 – Production News

" That puts us at late spring/early summer drop. That is about 25 months longer than we were hoping for but hey, we are finally on the home stretch eh? "

The image, in black and white, evokes nostalgia as it captures the essence of mid-century social hubs where contact information was often shared over drinks.

Exciting Updates on OldSols SunTops: Production Progress and More!

We’re excited to share the latest update on **OldSols SunTops**! After months of development and refinement, we’re thrilled to report on the progress we’ve made. The journey has been longer than expected, but our dedication to delivering top-quality **OldSols SunTops** remains unwavering. In this update, we’ll dive into the challenges we’ve overcome, the materials we’ve chosen, and the next steps as we approach the final stages of production.

It’s been a few months since our last post. We didn’t forget, trust! We have just been busy as everyone probably is (we were led to believe the end of the world would be more looting and fewer Zoom calls…)… We also said we didn’t want to update you until there was update-worth news. We think there is now and we’ll try to exercise brevity.

First, our carbon fiber supplier informed us that since giving us the original quote for the inner carbon fiber OldSols SunTop piece, material costs have doubled the cost to produce them. As much as we love the carbon fiber prototype we have (maybe we’ll auction that off or be selfish goblins and keep it haha) it wouldn’t be fiscally possible to use that and still have the cost at all reasonable for you all. This will however be a custom order option.

But the good news is our thermoformer took a look at it and said, “Oh yeah, I can do that no problem.” Remember how pricy a thermoforming mold is? TRUST US …. REALLY expensive.  Well, now there are two molds lol. But it is all going to be worth it in the end. The auxiliary benefit of now having the entire top thermoformed is the fitment will be even better AND we can get more out to everyone quicker and at a more cost-effective price point!

As far as colors go. The inner panel will again be the same grey color that it is now but NOT fiberglass. We have opted for Bronze color tops for the first go around. We are still trying to source the blue-hue-tinted sheets  – difficult to find.

We just dropped off an uncomfortably large check to our manufacturer to start the tooling process on the molds. We think it’s important to explain this because we learned it as we were reading the contract.

Tooling the molds will take approximately 6-8 weeks

Material ordering is 3-5 weeks (as tooling is being completed)

Production time is 3-4 weeks

That puts us at a late spring/early summer drop. That is about 25 months longer than we were hoping for but hey, we are finally on the home stretch eh? This first batch is now looking like it will be a limited number run instead of an open order. That number is still undecided, but may be as low as 50 SunTops. ***That is just for the first batch, not total***.

This is because as much as we would like to wake up to 500 orders, that would not be fair to all of you. This is still new to us and after the thermoforming is done, our work begins to assemble and test every top before we then hand pack and ship each top to WHEREVER ON THE EARF it is going to.

All OldSols SunTops will be serialized as well with a production number…because it’s dope.

THANK YOU for all of your support and patience with this. It has truly been the thing that has kept us going as we work well into the night most nights on this stuff (that and copious amounts of coffee). If you have any questions, comments, or concerns please don’t hesitate to reach out and ask on our Discord or our social media channels!

Thanks!

Kent & Brad
