OldSol of the Month February 2025 – Honda Del Sol Spotlight

Meet Scott, aka Blaze, from Eastern Washington! (@xblaze2010x)

If there were ever a person who embodies the saying “third time’s the charm,” it’s Blaze! His journey with Hondas—and especially the Del Sol—has been an adventure full of speed, heartbreak, determination, and, ultimately, triumph. Let’s dive into his story and celebrate this month’s OldSol!

Why Hondas? Why the Del Sol?

Blaze’s love for Hondas started way back in his childhood, tearing up dirt trails on two wheels. Honda was the gold standard for reliability, so when it came time to pick his first car in 2006, it was a no-brainer. Guided by the wisdom of Modified Mag and SuperStreet, he grabbed a 1990 Accord 4-door with all the goodies—coils, a header-back system, and a light flywheel. He was living the dream… until he crashed it. Then fixed it. Then blew the motor.

But did that stop him? Nope. Enter: a 1994 Civic CX Hatch with a B18 swap—perfect, until it was stolen. Ouch. With a newfound desire for a drop-top, he found himself drawn to the Del Sol. He snagged one from Honda Tech (shoutout to WrongWD!), fell in love… and then, heartbreak again. Stolen after just five weeks. The universe was testing his patience.

That’s when he made a vow: No more Civics unless they had a safe home in a garage. But as we know, fate had other plans!

Blaze’s Del Sol Journey

Fast forward to 2015. A coworker had a ‘97 Sol Si he was ready to part with. $3,500 later, it was Blaze’s. His original plan was simple—pull out the Y8, daily-drive a trusty EJ, and rebuild the Sol. Then… life happened. A kid, five years, and two moves later, the poor car sat on blocks, collecting dust (and serving as a cozy mouse house—seriously). But Blaze was ready for redemption!

Cue the total rebuild: interior gutted, new carpet, seats, AC deleted, power steering yeeted, a fresh stereo, and, most importantly, a JDM B20b heart transplant. The result? OEM+ perfection.

And just when things were looking smooth… he parked it under a car. Yep, the hood got crushed, but hey, now it’s rocking a carbon fiber replacement, complete with a lip and fogs. Sometimes, setbacks just push us toward even better upgrades!

What Makes the Del Sol Special?

Is it the quirky targa top? The S2000-like power-to-weight ratio? The fact that it’s one of the most unique Hondas ever made? Sure, all of those things play a role. But according to Blaze, what truly makes Del Sols special is the owners. It’s a community of dedicated, slightly eccentric, and totally passionate enthusiasts who keep these little legends alive.
